Three things I love about living in Fuquay Varina: the people, the local lifestyle, and events that allow me to see things rarely seen anywhere else. The Freedom Balloon Fest captures the last one quite nicely. I’m being honest here: when we moved our family to Fuquay Varina in 1990, there were a handful of grocery stores, a smattering of fast food options, and a gourd museum. (Yes, I said gourd museum. Technically in Angier, but Fuquay Varina has claimed the fame…)
My, how things have changed. Fuquay Varina has grown from a small offshoot of its more worldly cousin in Raleigh, and has quickly come into its own – boasting a fabulous downtown featuring trendy coffee shops, breweries (notice the plural) – and festivals drawing folks from all over the globe. The Freedom Balloon Fest is one of the events bringing folks together.
Again, I’m just being honest – crowds aren’t my thing, and I’ve not witnessed the magnificence of the morning balloon ascension yet. But I’m going to this year. The sweet girl who cut my hair this morning described it in such detail that I have to see it myself. Why don’t you come see it for yourself as well? Come check out my town. Have a cup of coffee and a scone at Stick Boy and witness the balloons lift up into the Memorial Day sky. And let me know what you think.
